Background
First reported by the Daily Wire, and now widely reported by other outlets including Fox, Miami Herald, New York Post, AOL, and many others, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) supervisor, Marn’i Washington, was fired for instructing her subordinates to skip homes with Trump signage or banners and banners, thereby blatantly and intentional systematically violation many people’s constitutional rights. Her alibi that her actions were consistent with agency guidance and that others did it too, is at best meaningless. As a FEMA supervisor, she is responsible for the instructions she gave. But at worst it exposes the upper brass to liability and civil exposure as well.
Ms. Washington had instructed disaster relief workers canvassing in Lake Placid, Florida, after Hurricane Milton to “avoid homes advertising Trump.” At least twenty homes and their dwellers were victims of this selective outrageous activity.
As per the Daily Wire reporting, the houses were skipped over by the workers, who wrote messages such as “Trump sign no entry per leadership” in a government system.
Thankfully, FEMA’s administrator on employee misconduct, Deanne Criswell, confirmed to Fox News Digital that Washington had been fired and called her actions “reprehensible” and a clear violation of FEMA’s core values and principles to help people regardless of political affiliation. And a FEMA spokesperson told Fox News the agency was “deeply disturbed” by Washington’s actions but insisted it was an “isolated incident.”
The spokesperson further said “the employee who issued this guidance had no authority and was given no direction to tell teams to avoid these homes, and we are reaching out to the people who may have not been reached as a result of this incident.”
In contrast to FEMA’s assertion the incident was isolated, Washington said there were similar “avoidance” protocols in place not only in Florida but also in North Carolina.
Bottom line:
These actions constitute a blatant and intentional violation of these people’s Constitutional rights. Whether Ms. Washington was acting on her cognizance, or whether she was doing as ordered by FEMA higher ups, is completely irrelevant for purposes of how much compensation you may be entitled to. If you were or are a hurricane victim who would have otherwise been entitled to some sort of FEMA relief, but you were skipped or refused service because of your political views, you may be entitled to compensation, and it behooves you to retain counsel.
